Malpensa Airport, located between Milano and Varese, is one of two major international airports in Italy, is the main hub of Alitalia, the Italian national flag carrier. This airport connects Milan and Lombardy with the rest of world.

Before major improvement work carried out in 1998, the airport was used mostly for long-haul flights to the United States, South Africa, and Asia. Flights to Europe, Middle East and North Africa were based in Linate airport which is much smaller than the improved Malpensa. Today most these flights, except some national and European flights using narrow-bodied aircraft have been transferred from Linate to Malpensa.

The area of Malpensa is connected by the Milano-Varese highway as well by a dedicated train called "Malpensa Express".  The shuttle train, Malpensa Express, runs between Terminal 1 and Milan Cadorna Station. The 40-minute trip makes intermediate stops at Milan Bovisa Politecnico and Saronno. Trains run every 30 minutes throughout the day.

There is regular bus service from Malpensa airport to Porta Garibaldi Station and Stazione Centrale (central rail station). From the central station it is easy to get a taxi to your final destination. The buses run about every 1/2 hour from 6 A.M. to midnight. The fare to the central station is around Eur 8 and the travel time will be about 1 hour.

The Malpensa airport has the IATA Airport Code MXP and the ICAO Airport Code LIMC.  (IATA Airport Code LIN).

Malpensa International Airport has two terminals, T1 for commercial traffic and T2 for charter and low-fares traffic. The T1 has two satellites: A - National and european traffic; B - International traffic. The third satellite (C) is under construction. There is also a dedicated cargo terminal called "CargoCity".
