Lake Maggiore tourism have a huge charme because the lake has been an idyllic muse for famous personalities like Flaubert, Wagner, Goethe and Hemingway. In fact, the region inspired Hemingway to write A Farewell to Arms and those of you who have read the novel will see it come to life here.

Lake Maggiore is the most westerly of the three large Prealpine lakes of Europe and the second largest in Italy after Lake Garda. It is located westward and belongs partly to Italy, between Lombardy and Piedmont, and partly (about one seventh) to Switzerland. The Lake Maggiore is surrounded by the impressive alpine mountain chain, which is often covered in snow and many villas, some historical, which are surrounded by flourishing Italian or English gardens, with balustrades, statues and water games.

There are many typical little towns arount the lake Maggiore, but the biggest and most important town on the lake is Stresa, a wonderful place to relax admiring romantic landscapes...  a wonderful place to relax. You can take leisurely promenades on the lakefront. Most of the town’s activities are in this region and on the road leading to the town center. The lakeside promenade is where most writers came for inspiration.

From Stresa you can take a boat ride to another attractive place: Borromean Islands.

They take the name from the Borromeo Family, that have owned them since the 12th century.

Borromean Islands have attracts a lot of tourism year after year, and they consist of three small islands: Isola Bella, Isola Pescatori and Isola Madre.
The first two islands, isola Bella and Isola Pescatori have nice villages, and are available for tourism; the third one is not free to visit for tourists.

Another unusual attraction for lake maggiore tourism is Santa Caterina del Sasso, on the eastern shore of the lake. This is unusual tourism attraction because of its location and its history.

One of the best way to enjoy the beautiful scenarios of the lake Maggiore is to take a round trip, between Stresa and Locarno via Domodossola. You take the tiny ‘Centovalli’ –railway, which twists, climbs and creaks its way between Switzerland and Italy through the Centovalli (One Hundred Valleys) and the Valle Vergozza. From Domodossola to Stresa on a regular Trenitalia train.

Another suggestive experience is to take your Lake travel by boat. Craggy rocks with the bluest of lakes way below you, (gulp); waterfalls, chestnut woods, tiny rustici (stone built houses) just metres away from the train window.

The climate is mild in both summer and winter, producing Mediterranean vegetation, with beautiful gardens growing rare and exotic plants. By the way, the best periods to plan a visit in lake maggiore is from April to October.
